The manor of Branscombe is first documented in King Alfred's will in AD857. It was given by King Athelstan to the Benedictine monastery of St Peters, Exeter in AD925 and thence to the new cathedral in Exeter when the latter was moved from Exeter to Crediton. It is recorded in Domesday Book as the property of Bishop Osbern with a value of £6.00 yearly.
