Full description

A brief account of the foundation and work of the observatory. It was originally founded by by Sir Norman Lockyer and Lt. Col. Mclean in 1913 and became a corporation in July, 1916. The site on top of Salcombe Hill has an unbroken horizon in every direction and has good atmospheric conditions being away from the glare of artificial lights and traffic. The contour of the hill also makes it unsuitable for much housing development. The routine work of the observatory comprises mainly photographing the spectra of stars and classifying them assocding to the temperature and chemical composition.
