Numerous earthwork features in the southern part of the field which are related to mining activity at East Chillaton Manganese Mine. The area is shown as pitted on the 1940s Royal Air Force aerial photographs and is recorded as active in 1942, presumably as part of the war effort. It was worked for ochre in 1968. While most evidence suggests openwork pits, there are shafts in the adjacent land parcels so it is possible that there are below ground workings. The most arresting feature is at the top of the hill, how partly obscured by scrub, comprising parallel curvilinear earthwork banks with 'spokes' between. Removal of scrub and debris may reveal more detail. Other details: Photos.
