’lower paper mills’ shown on os 25” (1880s) map as a large irregular shaped building with an ‘aqueduct’ to the northeast (os).

Lower mill was described as a woollen factory in a sale advertisement of 1848 and appears to have been used for paper making after this date. From about 1927 to about 1940 the waterwheel was used to generate electricity for the town. Thereafter the wheel was disused. Wheel was about 24' diam and 10' wide (skinnard).

Operated as a paper mill between 1816 and 1906. A paper making machine was installed. Perhaps some connection with stowford mill (see cross reference) (shorter, 1950).

WATTS, Untitled Source (Unspecified Type). SDV81027.

Waterwheel removed in 1976. Siting of old people's home altered to enable wheel pit to be retained with intention of eventually replacing wheel (watts).

Mill destroyed by fire in 1941 during wwii when it was used to supply electricity. Remains of the aqueduct and wheelpit seen in 1994 (bodman).
