Full description
Reichel, O. J., 1928 - 1938, The Hundred of Black Torrington in Early Times, 194,228,229,239 (Article in Monograph). SDV2105.
Halwill was Halgewilla in Domesday. Before the conquest it was held by Bristric and farmed by Goscelm. After the conquest it was held by Queen Mathilda as forfeited subjects lands. In 1241, it was held by Nicholas de Bolevill and Avice his wife (Testa de Nevil). Other details: 1928-1938.

Halwill was Halgewilla in 1086, Haliwill in 1228, Halghewill in 1242, Halywell in 1296 & Halleghwille in 1355. The place takes its name from a 'holy well'.
