Summary

A possibly incomplete rectilinear single ditched enclosure of probable later prehistoric to Roman date was visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark on the gentle slopes overlooking the floodplain of the River Exe to the north of Stoke Canon. A fainter curvilinear cropmark within the enclosure might be evidence of a round house.

Parts of three sides of an apparently rectangular enclosure visible on cuc air photograph in smr. Other fainter cropmarks. Site recorded by f. M. Griffith 4/6/1984. Appears really to have only 3 sides, with no east side. Length of west side 45m, of north side 40m. To the west a linear feature 150m long. Another 90m long crosses the enclosure. An irregular line of very marked pits runs ne-sw to the west of the enclosure (griffith).

A single ditched enclosure of probable later prehistoric to Roman date was visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark on the gentle slopes overlooking the floodplain of the River Exe, to the north of Stoke Canon and south of Burrow Farm. The cropmark was between 2 and 3 metres wide and defined almost three complete sides of a rectilinear or square enclosure measuring approximately 36 metres to a side. The ditches defining part of the south and most of the east sides of the enclosure appear not to have been completed. A fainter curvilinear cropmark visile in the north-east quadrant of the enclosed area might be evidence of the drip gulley of a round house circa 15 metres in diameter.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree.
