Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Great Blakewell farm is shown on the 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map as a group of buildings around a yard with a pump off the south eastern corner of the east range. There appears to be an additional building and possibly a pond to the south and further structures to the east, including two on either side of the driveway. These two buildings have now gone and the historic core of the farmstead is now surrounded by several large modern barns with a modern farmhouse to the west.

Andrews, J. H. B., 1962, Chittlehampton, 320 (Article in Serial). SDV82648.

Great Blakewell is first referred to in 1277 as 'Blakewelle', meaning dark spring. In 1641 it was the home of Thomas Chapel. There is said to have been a chapel on the site but no trace remains (see PRN 17228).

Wessex Archaeology, 2007, Historic Environment Audit of Devon County Farms. Pilot Project. Results of Great Blakewell Farm, Chittlehampton (Report - Assessment). SDV338342.

Historic environment audit of Great Blakewell Farm undertaken by Conservation Management, a division of Wessex Archaeology, for Devon County Council. Great Blakewell Farm is one of the 93 holdings that make up Devon County Farms Estate. The farm currently covers an area of c60 hectares with the river Taw forming part of the western boundary. The landscape can be characterised by medieval enclosures based on strip fields. Map evidence indicates that a number of field boundaries have disappeared since the time of the Tithe Map.
