Full description

Swinton, A. H., 1900-1901, Pot de vin near Totnes, 254-5 (Article in Serial). SDV170915.

Terraced fields mark the site of a vineyard. Some chips of brown pottery have been found on the site.

Windeatt, E., 1918-1919, Devonshire Wine, 218 (Article in Serial). SDV170916.

Tradition says this well sheltered site produced grapes for wine production.

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 298 (Monograph). SDV1312.

Puddaven is first mentioned in the lay subsidy rolls of 1330 as 'podefenne'. It appears in various documents throughout the middle ages and spelt in different ways. It probably means 'pud(d)a's or pod(d)a's marshy spot.

Goodyear, R.I. (AFU), 1990, Untitled Source (Worksheet). SDV138299.

The suggested site of ancient vineyard (possibly in operation during the 14th and 15th centuries) represented by terraced fields and 'brown pottery' of unknown date. The pipeline cuts through a smallholding called 'Vineyard' in the mid C19.
