Well Farm together with its two water grist mills in the valley below was conveyed to John Tothill of Ideford in 1656. John Tothill sold Well and the mills the following year to John Clotterbrooke of Ideford.

Documentary reference to Ideford Mill in 1692. At that time it was rented by John Guildford from Mrs. Clutterbuck but he quitted when she failed to make good necessary repairs. A fire insurance policy of 1776 refers to 'a farmhouse and water mill house adjoining and on the mills in the millhouse'.
