Charnaford farm is pobably the 'Churne' mentioned in 1397 and the 'Churne in the parish of Witherigge' mentioned in 1489.

South Coombe was probably originally 'Churne'. It is suggested that it was re-named because the owner also held Charnaford in Thelbridge, and the similar name was causing confusion.
