Mill leat shown along north side of Parkwood Road, from east of Kelly College to the iron and brass foundry on Parkwood Road, and on to the Town Mill. Map object based on this source.

Leat marked Drake's Pool mill Leat is shown on a plan of Tavistock of 1752. Started at Head Weir and entered the town through Lower Brook Street to power the old Abbey Mill.

This leat was constructed between 1150 and 1200, to power both the Abbey Mill and the new Town Mill. Nothing to do with Sir Francis Drake, the name refers to a local family.

The course of the mill leat through Parkwood formed part of the borough boundary in the 18th century and the mill sites along it were probably all occupied in the medieval period.

Leat cut to serve the town corn mill which was built in the 12th century. Called the Mill Brook, the leat took water from the River Tavy, about a mile upstream, and flowed through the Parkwood area, where it was to serve other mills, and into the town where it took over from the Fishlake in passing on from the town mill to serve the abbey corn mill as well.
