Plot named as Brickyard (293) on Barnstaple Tithe Map and Apportionment, occupied by John Thorne.

Alluvial clay-bed on the site of what is now Pulchrass Street to the north of Summerland Street which was first worked between the years 1810-15. The pantiles and ridge tiles made here were stampled with the name 'Thorne'. Elephant remains were found at a considerable depth in 1844, 1870 and 1871.
