Worswell is first mentioned in the calendar of charter rolls of 1239. It appears in various forms throughout the middle ages until it finally becomes worswell in the recovery rolls of 1670. It is a difficult name. The meaning could be interpreted in several ways but it could come from the old english word wiersta meaning worst (gover et al).
