(09/02/1989) At SX 6574 8042, on the summit of Merripit Hill, is a preminent mound representing an infilled mine shaft enclosed by debris. The shaft area is now level and about 4.5m in diameter. Apart from a gap in the S.W. it is encircled by a bank of upcast 4.5m to 5.2m wide and up to 1.5m high. The whole is grass covered.
About 30m. to the E, at SX 65778042, the outline of a circular feature is just traceable in heather.
Approximately 11m. in diameter it is primarily visible on the eastern half as a bank 1.2m. wide and barely 0.2m. high.
Its proximity to the shaft suggests a contemporary and associated work of uncertain purpose though the possibility of a prehistoric ringwork cannot be entirely discounted.
