Name:Rectilinear enclosure north of Titchen’s Lane, Loxbeare

Summary

A rectilinear enclosure of probable later prehistoric date is visible on images derived from lidar data as subtle earthworks located on the east facing slopes of a west-east aligned ridge, to the north of Titchen’s Lane, Loxbeare parish. The enclosure is bisected by the road from Temple Farm Cross to Kitterbury Farm, the northern part falling within a field named Castle Close on the Tithe Apportionments for Loxbeare.

Field name castle close on tithe map (t. M. ). A reasonable position for a defensive site, on a watershed above 250m. Note place name "kitterbury" just below (os).

HER cites tithe field name 'Castle Close' as evidence for site of an earthwork (no archaeological evidence known). A univallate enclosure, measuring c. 130m diameter, is clearly visible on lidar imagery. It is ovoid in shape and a short length of the NW defences are fossilised beneath an extant hedgebank.
