Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1982, SX78NE34 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV295818.

(16/02/1982) Four cairns are visible on a slight west slope near the eastern summit of Mardon Down.
A: SX 77508792. Diameter 4.0m., height 0.3m.
B: SX 77478778. Diameter 5.5m., height 0.4m.
C: SX 77498779. Elongated, 6.0m. north to south, 2.0m. wide.
D: SX 77508779. Diameter 5.5m., height 0.4m.
All are grass and bracken covered, with unweathered stones protruding, and are in an area of moorland which has undergone clearance and subdivision into strip fields about 35m. wide and 200m. long (See SX 78 NE 28). The fields are more perceptible on the air photographs (a) than on the ground but may have been intended to accommodate rig and furrow.
As such it is more likely that the cairns represent clearance, particularly 'C', and are of Medieval or later origin.
Surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. (Plan with SX 78 NE 35).

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

These features are clearly visible, as the bracken has been recently cut east of Headless Cross. Other features were notes nearby but no record made.
