Full description
Unknown, 1977, Untitled Source (Unattributed Sites and Monuments Register Entry). SDV342281.
Fields numbered 2373 and 2372, on the Fremington Tithe Map of circa 1840, are named 'Eastern Castle' and 'Western Castle' respectively. The site was visited in 1976, and is now amalgamated into a single field. There is no local knowledge of any monument, but it is believed the field had been disturbed by wartime activities.

Possible prehistoric activity occurred just to the south of East Yelland Marsh, where an oval field was formerly divided and named 'Eastern Castle' and 'Western Castle'. The 'castle' element often denotes the presence of prehistoric (or later) earthworks. No such features are currently visible, although the southern boundary of the field is marked by a sunken lane. It is suggested that it was a medieval timber castle that stood in the vicinity of Castle Field at Lower Yelland Farm which was probably built by Hentry de Tracey III (1197-1274).
