Full description

Griffith, F. M., 1983, Sandwell Dovecote (Ground Photograph). SDV340275.

Site visit 8th June 1983. At the rear of Sandwell is a detached (or nearly detached) square building with a pigeon loft above. The lower floor is served by an apparently original chimney - possibly a cookhouse or laundry. It is stone built with a slate roof. It could well be contemporary with the main building: Possibly early 19th century.

Wills, A., 2008, Devon's dovecotes, an undergraduate investigation, Appendix 1O (Undergraduate Dissertation). SDV366424.

An almost detached building to the rear of Sandwell, with a chimney serving the lower floor. It is built of stone rubble with a slate roof, c.5.2m by 5m by c.5m high to eaves level. Probably a pigeon loft with a dual purpose as a granary. The flight holes have substantial flight ledges. The ground floor section was apparently lined with zinc sheeting prior to its conversion to a dwelling in the 1990s.
The building is possibly contemporary with the main house, dating to around 1780 and as such is a good example of a late 18th century pigeon loft.

Bluesky International Ltd/Getmapping PLC, 2015 onwards, 2015 onward Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV362959.

Square building visible very close to the east side of the house.

Historic England, 2025, National Heritage List for England 2025, 1215392 (National Heritage List for England). SDV366287.

Included in listing description for Sandwell. Described as a small service wing adjoining north east, square on plan with pyramid slate roof and 4 tiers of pigeon holes on first storey with slate flint ledges. On ground storey, probably reused, for-light ovolo-moulded timber mullion window with circa early C19 casements with glazing bars. Linked to rear of east side by short range with lower roof.
Date first listed: 9th February 1961. See listing description for full details of the house.
