Full description

'Tavistock Bank' marked.

A purpose-built banking house for the Tavistock Bank. The bank was founded in 1791, but the internal details would rather support a date in the first quarter of the 19th century. There has been considerable alteration to the ground floor, but the upper floor appears to preserve much of the domestic accommodation of the original building.

Department of Environment, 1983, Tavistock (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV272550.

Formerly listed as No 9 (Bank House). Probably dates to circa 1791. Built as the Tavistock Bank. Three storeys, four windows. The upper floors are now pebble-dashed. Sash windows with glazing bars. Stringcourse. Parapet. Late 19th century stone shopfront with rusticated pilasters. Interior has good late 18th century doorways and fireplaces on first floor.
