Summary

Garden surrounded by high brick walls. Its layout was still traceable in 1981. It is thought to have been laid out as a kitchen garden at the time Bridwell House was built in the late 18th century. It is shown on a plan of 1779.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The walled garden is depicted with laid out beds and several greenhouses to the south of the farm. To the south of the walled garden is another garden, the two are linked by a pathway through the south wall of the walled garden and also by a path extending around the west side of the latter.

Site visit 14th April 1981. The attractive walled garden to the south of Old Bridwell was probably constructed at the same time as Bridwell House, in the late 18th century.

Site visit 18th August 1981. The garden is surrounded by high brick walls and its layout is still traceable, although it has not been looked after recently.

There is a stone coat of arms, probably dated to the late 17th century, set into a brick arch leading to the walled garden.
