The Town Mill is believed to have been a stamping mill in earlier times, for ores from nearby mines.

Tin mill on the site of the later woollen mill, Buckfastleigh. Blowing/stamping mill. Large quantities of unspecified slag found in 1889 with "ashes and debris" on the site of Hamlyn's Woollen Mill. There is a tradition of a stamping mill on the site. Other details: No 10, In SMR.
