There is no documentary evidence for a settlement in West Teignmouth until the 13th century, although the location of the parish church, St. James, at the southern end of the principal street is identical to that of St. Michael's in East Teignmouth.
The three main thoroughfares in West Teignmouth during the medieval period were Exeter Street, Bitton Street and Teign Street.
The borough forms a pair with the adjacent medieval borough of East Teignmouth.
