Full description

English Heritage, 03/05/2013, Amendment of Listing, 5 market Street, Tavistock (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV351383.

Amendment to listing. The east end of the building fronts onto North Street and was historically a separate building. The amendment request is principally to clarify the extent of the list entry, particulaly with regard to the east end of the building. The end faces onto North Street and is occasionally known as 8 North Street. This history appears to have created some confusion over the building addresses. Historically the west and east ends have at times been two separate buildings. Since at least the late 19th century the two ends have been shown as one building, although there have been occasions in the 20th century where the ground floor has been subdivided to create two commercial premises. The ground floor is currently in use as a single commercial premise. The east end of the building has certainly undergone the greatest amount of change, and the east elevation is largely a 20th century restoration. However, this end of the building is 18th century in origin and retains a good proportion of its historic roof structure, as well as its historic stone end walls. It is structurally integrated with the Market Street end and forms part of the historic development of this town house.

In conclusion, despite the alterations which have taken place over the years, particularly to the east range, there is still sufficient suviving historic fabric and the overall special interest of the building is retained.
