Full description
Department of Environment, 1972, Urban District of Crediton, 20 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV39769.
No 80 High Street. Eighteenth century. Roughcast. Low pitched corrugated asbestos roof with gabled ends. Three storeys. Two widely spaced windows, second floor two-light casements with glazing bars, first floor sash with glazing bars. Ground floor sashes with margin bars only. Central recessed door with reeded doorcase. Large brick chimney stack.

House, being converted to flats at time of survey. Probably an early C19 recasting of an earlier building. Roughcast cob; slate roof; stack with brick shaft in party wall with No 79, stack with massive rendered shaft in party wall with No 81. Plan: Double depth, 2 rooms wide, with central staircase.The ground drops away to the rear where the house has an extra storey and rear access with a service yard. Exterior: 3 storeys to the front, 4 to the rear. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a central 5-panel front door, the bottom panels flush. Ground floor windows late C19 or early C20 2-pane sashes with margin panes; first floor windows early C19 16-pane sashes; second floor windows small-pane C20 timber casements. The rear elevation has a mixture of sashes and casements and C20 roof lights. Rear centre storm porch with cob cheeks and a lean-to corrugated iron roof, C19 4-panel rear door. Interior: Boxed stair with short section of balustrade with stick balusters and a turned newel post. Early C19 joinery. Group value with listed buildings on both sides of the High Street. The tall rear elevation contributes to an attractive urban group.
