Full description

No 5 (Gaveney House School), Salterton Road. Early 19th century house. Stuccoed façade with angle pilasters and cornice. 2 storeys. 4 windows, garden front has curved projection in centre. Entrance front has 3 windows and good porch with square piers and iron balustrades.

Highfield House marked on 1880s-1890s 25 inch Ordnance Survey map, a large house with associated outbuildings set in its own grounds on the corner of Gussiford lane and New Road (now Salterton Road).

There is little basis for removal of this substantial early 19th century villa from the statutory list. It is a handsome and imposing stuccoed villa set in a substantial garden which remains relatively unspoilt. The principal elevations retain their original double hung boxed sash windows and much of the stuccoed plaster detail remains, including a distinguished porch.

Gaveney House, 5 Salterton Road. House, converted into flats. Early 19th century, [reputedly 1806]; altered in 20th century. Stuccoed, now partly roughcast. Roof hidden behind parapet. Rendered stacks. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window south-east front with angle pilasters and rebuilt parapet; 12-pane sashes and central doorway with round arch, panelled reveals, semi-circular fanlight with radiating bars and panelled door; large porch with two pairs of piers, but iron balustrade removed. Left hand [south-west] return 1:2:1 windows, centre two in semi-circular bay.North-west elevation, 3 window range of 12-pane sashes. North-east side, various 20th century windows.
INTERIOR converted into flats and much altered, although one ground floor room and another on first floor are intact and there is some 19th century joinery; the staircase has been replaced. Dated listed: 6th December 1949. Date of most recent amendment: 12th November 1996.
