Full description
Jones, W., 1887, The Slannings of Leye, Bickleigh and Maristow (Article in Serial). SDV162368.
In the tower of Bickleigh church is a ledger stone inscribed: "Here lyeth the body of ye pious and charitable lady Elizabeth Modyford who departed this life the 30th day of March 1724 in the 91st year of her age relict of the Honble Sr James Modyford baronet and daughter of that loyal gentleman Sr Nicholas Slaning baronet (sic) who valient (ly) and heroically ventured & lost his life fighting for the good of his country & his royal master King Charles ye first of blessed memory". On the stone is a shield, with the arms of Modyford impaled with Slanning.
