Full description

Eighteenth century altered, three storey, narrow-coursed stone including voussoirs to flat arches of flush frame windows, now with modern casements, three at each upper floor. Two storey wing, right, with three-light sash window at first floor with Gothic panes at head and flat arch with key. Enriched wood eaves cornice. Machine tiles. Modern ground floor shops and entrances. Nos 4 to 32 (even) and Roman Catholic Church form a group.

Convent school run at 20 Fore Street by Sisters of St Thomas de Villanove from 1914 to 1921. It was then taken over by the Grammar School. In the basement, now a solicitors' store room, are a wall painting of the Madonna and Child and hooks labelled with the names of Grammar School boys.

Kingsbridge was created as a market and a borough within the Manor of Churchstow by the Abbots of Buckfast in the 13th century. The layout of the town changed little until the 19th and 20th centuries. No 20 Fore Street was probably the town residence of the Abbot of Buckfast. The high status of the building is suggested by the remains of an elaborately decorated chapel and other features recorded in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The property passed to the Order of St Thomas of Villanova in the early 20th century who built a convent school to the rear. In 1921 the buildings were occupied by Kingsbridge Grammar School and then by the Town Council. The front part of the buildings then became shops with solicitors' offices to the rear.
