Probably 18th century toll-house, two storey cottage, thatched, wood casements and porch. Stands below road level.

Lowe, M. C., 1990, The Turnpike Trusts in Devon and their roads: 1753-1889, 52-53 (Article in Serial). SDV25125.

In 1758 Tiverton Turnpike Trust paid the toll gatherer at Ashley Gate towards the rent of the house at Ashley Gate instead of a toll house.

Rosevear, A., 2008, Devon Tollhouses, DV.TIV01 (Un-published). SDV351734.

Former road toll house. Cottage acquired in 1758 by the Tiverton Turnpike Trust. A single storey building with a prominent porch and a hipped thatched roof. There are no external features to show that this was a toll house. However, records indicate that the turnpike trustees rented a house at Ashley to accommodate the toll collector so this may be the cottage that was taken over by them.

English Heritage, 2012, National Heritage List for England (National Heritage List for England). SDV348729.
