Full description

Department of Environment, 1972, Tiverton, 26 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV52494.

No 44 (Barclays Bank), Fore Street, 18th century with alterations, three storey, three window stucco front, sash windows with glazing bars, and plaster architraves. Modern Georgian ground floor treatment.

House with commercial use on ground floor, formerly bank. Early 19th century with alterations. Mass wall construction; smooth-plastered; roof concealed behind parapet; stacks with rendered shafts to left. One room wide, two rooms deep with 20th century rear addition. An open passageway to the right leads to the market.
Exterior: three storeys. Three-window front. Coped parapet and probably 20th century cornice. Three first and three second-floor windows with moulded architraves, glazed with 20th century horned 12-pane sashes. The ground floor has an attractive neo-Georgian shop front of the circa1950s with composite columns flanking a passageway which has an overlight with geometric glazing bars. Similar arrangement to recessed door to office to left with two-leaf external panelled door, giving a symmetrical arrangement. Slightly bowed three-light shop window with fielded panels below the sill. The window entablature with a dentil frieze below the cornice; brackets carved with shields and swags. Interior not inspected but may retain features of interest.
