HER Number:MDV24802
Name:Shools Farm now Shoals, Axminster

Summary

The farmhouse, of brick, is later than the extant stone farm buildings, with map evidence suggesting it was built in the late 19th-early 20th century. The area of the southern part of the farmstead shown on the 1880s-1890s map, by the stream, is now allotments. The name, Shools, is not documented in the medieval period but it may well have had a different name at this time.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Shools Farm depicted as ranges of buildings on the north, east and west sides of a yard. The yard is bounded by a stream along the south side on the other side of which is an orchard. To the north is another range of buildings. A well is also shown to the east.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Site marked as Shools Villa. Comparison with the 1880s-1890s map shows the range of buildings on the west side of the yard to have gone and a new house to have been built to the north-west of the northernmost range.

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One (Monograph). SDV1312.

No early form of the name mentioned.

Weddell, P. J., 1985, Shools Farm (Worksheet). SDV118779.

Site visit 29th January 1985. The farmhouse is probably Victorian, of brick, but the stone outbuildings look much older.

Weddell, P. J., 1991, Archaeological Appraisal of Potential Development Areas in Axminster and its Environs, 6 (Report - Assessment). SDV99927.

The farmstead lay within the Domesday Manor of Haccombe. The antiquity of the farm is at present uncertain as it probably existed in medieval times under a different name.

Ordnance Survey, 2025, Mastermap 2025 (Cartographic). SDV366286.

Marked as Shoals. The southern area of farm buildings shown on the 1880s-1890s map by the stream is now allotments.
