Name: | Linear feature east of Drizzlecombe complex, Sheepstor |
---|
Summary
Previously recorded as a possible hollow way from aerial photographs (1985), Robertson (1990) describes this linear feature as a gully. In its surviving form it is probably a combination of tinners workings, a medieval/post-medieval boundary and, or a route way. The two leats which cut it provide a terminus post quem (1999).

Hollow way visible on aerial photographs on Ditsworthy Warren to the east of the Drizzlecombe Brook. Northern termination SX59326705, southern termination SX59116667. Two leats terminate at holloway (SX56NE/367 and SX56NE/370).
Robertson, J. G., 1994, The Archaeology of the Upper Plym Valley (Post-Graduate Thesis). SDV139549.
A significant linear feature extends down a fairly shallow sout-west facing hillslope alongside but not connected with the Drizzlecombe stone rows.
It commences at SX59316708 apparently as a shallow openwork up to 10.0m wide with no trace of a bank on either side. Flanking banks can be traced from SX59276700 as slight linear earthworks and they become strong stone and earth banks up to 0.6m high as the feature extends downhill. It terminates inconclusively at tinners workings at SX59136768.
It is cut by two leats: one at SX59226690 and the second at SX59196683.
Its origin and function(s) are unclear. The upper part appears to be a tinners openwork of a type encountered elsewhere in association with linear boundaries (c/f SX58126756). The main body of the feature is visually an embanked holloway but this classification is questioned by the existence, in the lower part, of a central low bank running down the spine. The four rectangular stony areas adjacent to the west side (SX 56 NE 173) are not linked to this feature.

(13/09/1999) The Sites and Monument Record classification for this site is a hollow way; Robertson (1990) describes it as a gully. In its surviving form it is probably a combination of tinners workings, a medieval/post-medieval boundary and, or a route way. The two leats which cut it provide a terminus post quem.
