Summary

Several groups of tin pits and two water channels on the north-east slopes of Hingston Hill. The pits are mostly grouped in alignments which have a predominantly south-west to north-east orientation though some run north to south while others are clustered or scattered. Two narrow water channels run down the steep lower slopes of the hill.

(01/08/2006) Several groups of tin pits and two water channels on the north-east slopes of Hingston Hill. The pits are mostly grouped in alignments which have a predominantly south-west to north-east orientation though some run north to south while others are clustered or scattered. They are approximately circular in plan, the diameter varies between 2 metres and 5 metres. The interiors are silted and the depths are between 0 metres (when silted) and 2.5 metres. Each has crescentic collar of spoil on the downslope side of up to 1.5 metres high. Two narrow water channels run down the steep lower slopes of the hill at SX 5916 7973 and SX 5905 7977. They are up to 6.5 metres wide by approximately 2 metres deep and may have been used as water diversion channels or a simple method of prospecting. The pits and channels are likely to be post-medieval in date.
