Full description

BIRD + HIRST, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV221965.

Brimpts north mine. Excavation running downhill from w side of engine shaft and incorporating an adit. The origin of this small cutting is uncertain. It probably was a small openwork (17c?) on a minor lode crossing the main lode just w of the engine shaft. In late 1851 the cutting facilitated the driving of an adit to join the main lode at the 5 fathom or adit level. The mine plan (dro 4672a/hs/r282c)shows the adit passage to be far from straight and this suggests the miners followed the soft ground of a cross-course rather than the straight line of a true cross-cut through granite. Normal practice was to discharge the water pumped from lower levels through the adit and this is probably the origin of the channel that continues downhill from the workings. A track leading away from the adit tail suggests the ore was brought out from the adit also. The adit mouth is now completely filled in (bird + hirst).
