Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Rectangular building shown on 19th century map on the south side of tramway.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Interpretation). SDV319854.

Small rectilinear enclosure beside tramway. Date and purpose unknown.

Everett, C., 1988, Haytor Down - Summary of Archaeological Features, HD11. Map 2 (Report - Survey). SDV359684.

Possible forge at 19th century Holwell Quarry.

Everett, C., 1988, Haytor Down, Plan (Worksheet). SDV304118.

Site visited in February 1988. Suggested forge at Holwell Quarry. Built into hillside on south side of granite tramway. Entrance on north side. The surviving wall suggests a building of 'lean-to' type, the front wall being lower than the back. A platform in the middle of the rear wall, with flue-like channels beneath, suggests a forge.

Butler, J., 1991, Dartmoor Atlas of Antiquities: Volume One - The East, 25, Map 1 (Monograph). SDV299725.

Small building shown on map.

Newman, P., 2002, Haytor Down, Ilsington, Devon, 27, Figure 12 (Report - Survey). SDV346395.

One of five buildings at Holwell Quarry. The large rectangular structure to the east of the site adjacent to the tramway is likely to be that depicted on a print of 1829 with a sloping thatched roof and could perhaps be an office.

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 2002, Haytor Down: The Archaeology (Plan - measured). SDV359685.

Rectangular building shown on survey.

Ordnance Survey, 2013, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV350786.

Building marked on modern mapping.
