Rumleigh first appears as 'Romeley' in 1298 in the assize rolls. It is probably a compound of rum and leah, meaning 'wide clearing'.

Ordnance Survey, 1954, SX47SW (Cartographic). SDV336689.

Shown on OS 6" 1954 map as 'Rumleigh House'.

Department of Environment, 1967, Bere Alston, 1 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV243692.

Meaton, C, 2023, Rumleigh House Limekiln and Summerhouse, Bere Alston: Conservation Assessment, (TAMARA Project), 13 (Report - Assessment). SDV365594.

The earliest origins of Rumleigh House are unclear, but documentary records for the estate date back to the early 14th century and Walter de Rumleigh. The Georgian
part of the house is thought to date from the 1720s during the ownership of Robert Young. There are also early and mid-19th century and 20th century alterations and
additions to the house. The walls of the original house are brick, with hung slate at the side, as well as part of the front and rear elevations.
