Summary

The old village school was erected in 1833, as the result of local effort. It was a small building, enlarged in 1870. In 1873 it became a state board school. It was left by the church commissioners and the vicar of Stockland to the school board for 5 shillings a year. When a new school was built in 1926 it was reconstructed by local effort and became known as the Church Hall. In 1970 it was purchased partly by local effort and became the village hall. The old school bell on the roof and the drinking fountain now dry, placed in the wall as part of Dalwood's contribution to Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee celebrations, remain as reminders of the old school. When Dalwood first had a school is not known, but possibly there was one in existence in 1671, because Zachary Mayne became schoolmaster to the village children in that year.
