Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The farmstead is depicted with a large house with projecting wings at either end, and three rectangular farm buildings, one of which is close to the north-east corner of the house.

The 1880s-1890s map marks Orchard as the remains of a Barton. Comparison with the Tithe Map shows a number of farm buildings to have been added, including a horse engine house to a barn standing to the north-west of the house.

Orchard is recorded as Orcherd in the feet of fines in 1242. It is mentioned again in the assizes of 1301 as Orchard juxta Bratton.
