A nine mile long carriage drive was built by Edward Baring, of Barings Bank, in the 1880s, as part of his improvements to the Memland estate which he had acquired in the 1860s. The drive ran from Membland Hall, southwards to the coast at Beacon Hill, then along the cliff top to Bridgend and returning to Membland via Newton Ferrers. There were two tea houses along the route at Beacon Hill and Warren Cottage.
