'B. S.' (boundary stone) depicted on the late 19th century historic map.

Hemery, E., 1983, High Dartmoor, 664 (Monograph). SDV249702.

Boundary stone near Cold East Cross marks the meeting place of the manor boundaries of Halshanger, Blackslade and Buckland. The initials are those of Philip Woodley whose family held Halshanger from 1586-1925 when it was purchased by William Whitley.

12/1/1982 Boundary stone. Roughly squared granite post, taller and thinner than the others nearby and inscribed PW 1746 on south side. Situated on Ashburton-Buckland boundary.

Brown, M., 1996, A guide to the Parish of Buckland-in-the-Moor, 12 (Monograph). SDV361770.

The fifth stone (from Blackslade Ford heading to Cold East Cross) is another 'odd one out'; a tall pillar bearing the inscription 'PW 1746'. The letters refer to Peter Woodleigh, Lord of Halshanger Manor. The reason for the date is something of a mystery as a stone stood at the spot much earlier; a 'longstone near Chagford Way' being named in a boundary report of 1683. This suggests a large pillar stood at this spot as early as 1683.
