Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.
'Earlscombe Corn Mill' shown on 19th century map as a group of buildings on both sides of the road. The mill building is shown as a square building on the north side of the road at the southern end of a 'Mill Leat'.
Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 287 (Monograph). SDV1312.
Earlescombe Mill was mentioned as 'Erlescombe' in 1312, 'Yorlescombe' in 1330 and 'Yerlescombe' in 1352. The Count of Mortain held four manors in the parish at the time of Domesday.
Unknown, 1975, Ugborough Parish Checklist (Worksheet). SDV340848.
Earlscombe Corn Mill. A small stone building on the north side of the lane at Earlscombe Farm. Traces of the wheel-pit can be seen, but the wheel has gone as has all the machinery. Two mill-stones remain leaning against the east wall. Was an overshot wheel with water coming from a leat drawing off the Lud Brook at Peek Mill Bridge, about 550 metres to the north. The mill was in operation until the 20th century.
Turton, S. D. + Weddell, P. J., 1989, An Archaeological Assessment of the South Devon Spine Main (Roborough to Littlehempston), 6 (Report - Assessment). SDV138026.
The position of the tail-race from the mill is not obvious, but it may be in the area to the south of Earlscombe Farm through which the pipeline passes.

Earlscombe Mill was first mentioned in 1850. The mill was operational into the 1950s when the overshot wheel and machinery were removed and the tail race was concreted over. The unlined leat feed into a high level millpond which has been levelled to provide a flat hard standing. The mill was rebuilt following a fire.
Lawson, A., 2010, Conversion of Redundant Mill into Living Accommodation (Planning Application). SDV351727.
The structure has been greatly altered from its original detail. A scheme has been produced that would convert the mill to domestic accommodation, and in doing so reinstate former openings and remove inappropriate materials, as well as rebuilding the ground floor lean-to in like manner. Drawings, photographs and plans attached.
