Unknown, 1581, Grant relating to Southbrook / Little Brook Cottage, Buckland in the Moor (Record Office Collection). SDV288889.

The first documentary mention of Southbrook Cottage seems to be in a grant of 1581 now held in the Devon Record Office.

Visited in 1977. Southbrook Cottages now called Little Brook, situated opposite Southbrook Farm at right angles to road about 120 metres south of the bridge. Two storey stone built cottages with thatched roof, t-shaped with shallow gabled wings projecting north and south at east end of house. Casement windows, semi-dormer on 1st floor. Those on ground floor have heavy granite lintels.

The original house may have consisted only of the 2 south-west rooms, making a roughly symmetrical house with end chimneys.(doe).

House, at one time divided into 2 cottages. Probably late C17 or early C18; the north-east end possibly a later addition. Granite rubble. Thatched roof with small gablets projecting front and back at the north-east end. 2 plain thick stone chimneystacks on the ridge, one on south-west gable and the other, which is of ashlar, towards the north-east end. A third, smaller stone stack, probably early or mid C19, on north-east gable. 3-room plan; the original house may have consisted only of the 2 south-west rooms, making a roughly symmetrical house with end chimneys. South-west room seems to have belonged to a separate cottage at one time. 2 storeys. 3 windows wide; C20 metal casements on ground storey, C19 wood casements with glazing-bars above. The left-hand window is set in a slight projection, matched by a similar feature at the rear. At right-hand end is a doorway with old plank door, bead-moulded frame and cast iron knocker; open-fronted stone porch with wooden pent roof. To left of it is a blocked opening, possibly a former doorway. Left-hand doorway has chamfered, shouldered-head wood frame with scroll-stops; although clearly of some age, and with pegged joints, the crisp outline of this feature suggests that it may not be medieval or even C16. In front of it is a C20 glazed stone porch. Interior has few features. In ground storey the south-west gable-fireplace has a heavy granite lintel, chamfered with run-out stops. Fireplace in middle room, possibly in the original gable-end, has a similar granite lintel, but without the chamfer. Upper floor is carried on plain joists running from front to back. Roof has plain trusses with feet resting on the wall-tops; collars pegged to faces of principal rafters.
