The site is located on the western edge of the parish of Ashreigney, approximately 4.5km west-north-west of Ashreigney and 2.5km north-east of Dolton. It comprises two rectangular fields covering an area of c.8ha situated on the upland of the Torridge river valley. The surrounding landscape contains prehistoric ritual monuments and findspots which suggest that it formed part of a wider funerary landscape; whilst it also formed part of a prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval settled agricultural landscape. Until the 19th century the proposal site formed part of Riddlecombe Moor, an area of open moorland.
During the geophysical survey, it was noted that the three sub-oval earthwork mounds which form Scheduled bowl barrow monument SAM 1015146, appeared in good, though partially ploughed-out condition.
