Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

A milestone is marked as 'M.S. Barnstaple 9' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map.

Site visits 11th July 2007 and 22nd March 2018. Milestone located approximately 30 metres south of Foxhunters Inn, on the grass verge well back from the road.
Set up just prior to the closure of the Turnpike Trust in 1879 and inscribed '9/BARUM', from the Medieval Latin for Barnstaple.
It was found to be worn and partly sunk into the muddy verge, with a chunk missing from the top left hand side.
