Full description

Apparently a piece of carved granite stone had been seen some 46 years previously in the side wall of an extension of the main house at Pitt Farm. On removal of the plaster it turned out to be part of a medieval cross dating from the 14th-15th centuries. It is a type C classification.

Lying in a horizontal position, 52cm long, rectangular in section at base, with rounded corner spurs, and octagonal above.

Pitt Farm SX870945
A fragment of a cross shaft is built into the north-west corner of Pitt farmhouse, Whitestone, near Exeter. The cross shaft is rectangular is section at the base, octagonal above, with rounded corner stops. The fragment was found at the farm in the 1980s.
Cross shaft length 0.48 metres, width 0.35 by 0.30 metres. Chamfer of 0.10 metres.
