Summary

Stone, triangulated head with short projecting arms, curved on the underside, with inscriptions to Edward Capern and his wife Jane who both died In1894. Above inscription is a small recess with cusped head containing Capern's postman's bell of metal with wooden handle, but no clapper.

Full description

Department of Environment, 1985, Heanton Punchardon, 97 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV86763.

Gravestone to Edward Capern, died 1894. Stone, triangulated head with short projecting arms, curved on the underside. Inscription to Edward Capern. The Postman Poet (born Tiverton 1819, died Braunton 1894) with verse by Alfred Austin, the Poet Laureate. Also to Jane Capern, wife of Edward (died 1894) with verse by Capern:
"I'd be remembered for some word I said
Some thought immortal, winged with passing breath;
But more for one true tender-hearted deed
Since such sweet things the world doth sorely need."
Above inscription is a small recess with cusped head containing Capern's postman's bell of metal with wooden handle, but no clapper. Other details: LBS 98436.
