Milestone situated on grass verge c30m west of turn to Hayne. A typical tombstone-type milestone. A bit worn but generally in good condition. Legend reads ' 4 Barum'. One of a set of milestones running from Barnstaple as far as Tollbar Cross, some 16 miles of road, placed in 1879 to commemorate the closure of the town's Turnpike Trust. Each of the stones bears the medieval Latin name of BARUM and are simple tombstone-shaped markers displaying a countdown of the miles away from the town.
