Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Tithe Map shows a dwelling at this location.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map depicts the cottages. A 'beer house' is shown slightly further up the road (MDV20445).

Department of Environment, 1987, Sourton, 78 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV263856.

Griggs Prewley. House, originally farmhouse. Circa mid 17th century. Plastered stone rubble walls. Gable-ended asbestos slate roof. Two gable-end stacks - the left-hand one is stone rubble with dripstones, the right-hand stack has a 20th century brick shaft.
Originally probably a two-room plan with central through passage plan. Both rooms heated by gable end stacks - larger kitchen/living room to the right and smaller parlour to the left. Probably in the 19th century an outshut was added at the right end. In the 20th century a staircase was inserted blocking the passage and an outshut was built at the rear of the house. Two storeys.
Asymmetrical 3-window front of 20th century casements with glazing bars, 3-light except for central first floor window which is 2-light. 20th century Tudor-style door to left of centre. Probably 19th century outshut against the right-hand end which joins a 20th century outshut extending along the rear of the house.
Interior: the insubstantial feet of straight principals are visible on the first floor suggesting an 18th or 19th century date for the roof trusses. The fireplace in the right-hand room has a chamfered wooden lintel. The main ground floor rooms have heavy chamfered beams with no stops visible. The fireplace in the left-hand room is at present blocked.

Department of Environment, 1991, Amendment to a listed building, 11/6/1991 (Correspondence). SDV268923.

Formerly listed Grade II.

Quick, T., 1992, Dartmoor Inns, 84-5 (Monograph). SDV359976.

Dartmoor's newest inn; only opened in 1989. building is composed from two cottages combined to make one larger cottage. Interior comprises a large open-plan public bar with an oak-beamed ceiling and exposed stone fireplaces at either end. The smaller fireplace is an original. There has been an inn at Sourton Cross for at least 200 years. In a field adjoining the inn, there used to be a barn that was formerly an ale house, dating from the early 19th century. Unfortunately when the road was widened, the barn was demolished.

Ordnance Survey, 2017, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV359962.

Modern mapping depicts the Prewley Moor Arms public house. Has been considerably enlarged since it was cottages.
