Summary

A vermin trap located in tinworking remains. It comprises a 1.3m long stone-lined trap piercing a former boundary bank with funnels formed by tinworking debris. The cover stone with one square hole in the top lies to the side of the trap.

Cook, R. M. L., 1964, Old vermin traps on south-west Dartmoor, 198 (Article in Serial). SDV230549.

Ditsworthy Warren, site 4. Type IV, the trap is built at the entrance to a short tunnel through a low hedge, one example found only. This trap is in excellent condition and is complete except for iron pin. It is located on the north edge of Gutter Mire, 18.0 meters from the right bank of the Sheepstor Brook. Probable date of use 1700-1800. Other details: Plate 4.

Haynes' vermin trap number 13. A small and unusual trap guarding a hole in a tinner's wall. Being built against the hole it needs no funnel walls. Fragments of slate were found beside the long side stone and traces of iron rust in the middle of the trap. The cover stone having one hole only, has now been moved out of position. (20/03/2000) A vermin trap located in low-lying ground at SX58136694. It comprises a 1.3m long stone-lined trap which is now silted. Tinners banks form a rough funnel and the trap is built into a field wall. The cover stone which measures 0.9m by 0.6m by 0.2m with one square hole in the top lies to the side of the trap.
