Full description

Department of Environment, 1987, Manaton, 39 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV303187.

No 3 Freelands Cottage north of cottages on north-east side of road.
Cottage. Probably mid 17th century with 20th century extensions. Rendered granite rubble walls, and chimney stacks possibly with some cob. Thatched roof gable ended with wooden shingle roof to single storey section.
Original plan somewhat obscured by later alterations, either single cell house or two room with unheated higher end since reduced to one storey, original location of entrance also unclear. Gable end stack at lower end of hall/kitchen with newel staircase to one side of it. 20th century addition to front of higher end and large 20th century extension linked to corner of lower end. Two storeys. Two window front, small 20th century two-light casements with leaded panes, plate glass to ground floor right. Projecting chimney stack to right gable end.
Interior: main room contains open fireplace which has chamfered wooden lintel with scroll stops and granite jambs, the right hand are monolithic. In the left side is a brick oven. Adjoining the fireplace to the left is a stone newel staircase. There is one cross beam chamfered with scroll stops. At the upper end of the hall is a solid stone wall.
The roof consists of straight principal rafters with lapped and pegged collars.
Although considerably altered this house is recognizable from its features as a relatively unusual example in this area of a small 17th century cottage.
