There are documentary references to mill leases between 1557 and 1723, to a mill and fishery between 1578 and 1738 and to Weare Mills between 1707 and 1866. The mill is described in an advert in the Sherborne Mercury for 16th September 1771 as 'consisting of three grist mills, another for making groats and one malt mill, and a large bolting house for flower [sic]; supplied at all times with a large stream of water from the River Torridge'.
The Miller, for 6th May 1889, recorded that the mill had not long been fitted out with a roller system, driven by a turbine. At that time it was run by Thomas Fry.
